Energy Saving Lighting Designs

We all know that saving energy makes sense, for the environment, for our children and for our profitability. A recent study performed by an NHS Trust in the North of England demonstrated that lighting consumes over 33% of a hospital's electricity.

Working with Lumenata Lighting Design Ltd has enabled the same trust to take large strides towards reducing its electricity consumption. Using low energy light sources, coupled with intelligent lighting control technology has allowed the trust to reduce energy consumption by over 64% in certain areas, with minimal outlay.

As an approved consultant to the Carbon Trust, we regularly undertake lighting energy surveys with the aim of reducing the power consumed by a clients lighting technology. We are also able to access the funding provided by the Carbon Trust in order to assist any major capital investments required by our clients in order to save energy in these ways.

LED House, Ulverston, Cumbria

LED Lighting Design, Cumbria The brief was to create a stylish and contemporary lighting scheme with all the demands of energy efficiency that you would expect from an eco-friendly Baufritz home.

The result is what is believed to be one of only a handful of homes in UK to be lit entirely by LED bulbs - widely considered to be the lighting of the future thanks to their ultra low consumption of electricity and longevity.

So-called ‘secret’ lights by minimalist Italian range Buzzi & Buzzi – spotlights that can be built into walls and ceilings so that they disappear into the surroundings - were specially converted to LED and used throughout the house.

In keeping with the contemporary, minimalist theme, lights were used instead of walls to cleverly divide the large open plan living space into separate zones, with each area separately wired and controlled.

“We really wanted to do something a bit different that would benefit the environment. We felt we could justify spending the extra money to get the long term payback of a reduction in energy costs. We’re delighted with the result” said Lee Stoller, home owner

Clog and Billycock, Blackburn

LED Lighting in Action Lancashire gastro pub The Clog and Billycock aims to go ‘carbon neutral’ after installing a new eco lighting scheme that has dramatically reduced energy consumption. The venue in Pleasington, which is part of the Ribble Valley Inns chain owned by Michelin starred chef Nigel Howarth, brought in Lumenata Lighting Design to reduce carbon emissions. Lumenata’s new scheme involved switching halogen bulbs in existing light fittings that were installed as part of a £1.3m refurbishment several years ago for ultra energy efficient LED equivalents that throw out as much light but only use a fraction of the electricity and hardly ever need changing The £10,000 project has helped the pub cut its carbon emissions by around a third and reduced monthly electricity bills from £3,000 to £2,000, meaning the pub can now bid for gold – the highest accolade - in the national Green Tourism Business award scheme. The next step, says assistant general manager Craig Jackson, is to go ‘carbon neutral’ by spending some of the money saved on sapling trees, which could be planted in the grounds of nearby schools All four pubs in the chain are being entered for the Green Tourism Business Scheme award and The Clog and Billycock is confident of achieving the highest accolade – the gold award – because of its eco lighting programme. The switch to LED was made possible by an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust. The organisation authorises Lumenata to survey business premises to find potential energy savings and makes going ‘green affordable’ by then providing loans that can be repaid with the savings made through lower utility bills. Manager Craig Jackson said: “The wiring for the dimmable LEDs divided the different areas of the bar into sections so that we can use the lighting to create atmosphere and customers have noticed the difference. “Switching to LED has brought our monthly electricity costs down by a third and even reduced the need for air conditioning because LEDs generate less heat. As an added bonus, it means that instead of applying for the silver Green Tourism award, we can now go for gold.” Going green is an easy way for businesses to reduce their overhead costs and do something positive for the environment at the same time. LED is a constantly evolving technology that is being hailed as the lighting of the future because it gives the brightness and sparkle of a halogen bulb while using only a fraction of the energy. It also gives the added benefit of a much longer life, so bulbs don’t need to be replaced as often.

Ashton and Lea Golf Club, Preston

Ashton and Lea Golf Club, Preston "This energy efficient lighting scheme enabled the 101-year old Ashton and Lea Golf Club in Preston to reduce its carbon footprint and instantly slash energy bills by around 30%.

The scheme featured some of the latest low energy light fittings, combined with ‘intelligent’ lighting technology to maximise on energy savings. These included sensors in the club’s changing rooms, where lights were previously left on all day due to the lack of natural light, to switch lights off automatically when the rooms are empty" said Simon Plumb, Ashton and Lea Golf Club general manager

Shannon’s Mill, Walsall

Shannon’s Mill in Walsall is a multi purpose development comprising a major grocery store, town centre apartments and a public multi storey car park. Our customer, a major M&E contractor, instructed Lumenata Lighting Design Ltd to produce a lighting design for the car park that provided the specified light levels with the minimum number of lights. Using this approach had significant cost savings as the number of light fittings purchased could be minimised, as could the cost of installing the light fittings and there would be significant on-going savings to the end customer as the energy consumed when lighting the scheme is also minimised.

Using Lumenata Lighting Design Ltd, the customer was able to optimise the number of light fittings required and achieved the required savings three fold. While this is not the most glamorous of projects, we feel that it demonstrates that even a project such as the humble car park can seriously benefit from professional lighting design and who better to provide this than Lumenata Lighting Design Ltd – taking light seriously.
